Case Study – Active Travel Dashboard

Active Travel Dashboard – Smart City Case Study

Dublin is embracing smarter and sustainable urban mobility with its Active Travel Dashboard – a powerful new tool designed to provide insights into walking and cycling across the city.

Developed by Smart Dublin in collaboration with local authorities, the National Transport Authority, and academic partners, the dashboard brings together previously fragmented data from sources like the CSO, Google, Strava Metro, and Eco Counter sensors. This unified platform provides city planners, policymakers, and the public with clear insights into how people move through Dublin on foot and by bike.

Until recently, data on active travel was scattered and underused, making it difficult to plan infrastructure effectively. The dashboard solves this by offering real-time, interactive visualisations that highlight travel patterns, environmental benefits, and public health impacts. It quantifies key metrics such as fuel savings, carbon emission reductions, and even documents premature death prevented through increased physical activity.

The project was developed using Mapbox, a leading geographic visualisation tool, and in collaboration with Rudi O’Reilly Meehan of data&design. The vision of the dashboard was guided by input from a wide range of stakeholders during a dedicated workshop in early 2024. The result is a user-friendly, evidence-based platform that supports smarter investment in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Since its launch, the dashboard has already made major impacts, including winning the Mobility Award at the Smart City Expo and World Congress in Barcelona in November 2024. It has also increased public engagement with open travel data and strengthened support for sustainable transport initiatives.

For the public, this means safer, more efficient walking and cycling routes. For planners, it means better decisions backed by reliable data. And for Dublin, it marks a major step toward a healthier, greener, and more connected city.
