Call for Pilots 2024 Project
Category: Community Development 🏫
Young people are often excluded from decisions about the cities they live in. Craft My Street set out to change that by using Minecraft as a participatory tool to involve children and teenagers in shaping their communities. The project was led by the team from University College Dublin as part of the Smart Docklands Pilot Call 2024. Through in-class workshops and a dedicated online Minecraft server, students reimagined their neighbourhoods in a virtual Dublin – proposing playful, practical ideas for better public spaces.
We were thrilled to host a final showcase where over 50 students presented their ideas for improving the Docklands, based on the designs they built in Minecraft. The event brought together students, teachers, and project partners to celebrate the creative and thoughtful ways young people reimagined their neighbourhoods. Their energy, curiosity, and confidence showed that given the right tools, young participants can meaningfully engage with real-world challenges and contribute to civic conversations. The project was supported by Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain, you can read more here.
By recognising children and young people as active citizens, not just future ones, the project demonstrates how playful tools like Minecraft can lead to more inclusive, responsive urban design. Their ideas can contribute to a broader conversation about how cities can better reflect the needs of all generations. If you’re interested in joining the server please fill this form.
Deliverables: Minecraft-based engagement tools, school workshops, final showcase, and a public online server.
