Immersive Graffiti

Call for Pilots 2024 Project

Category: Antisocial Behaviour/Safety 🚸

Graffiti has long sparked tension – illegal tagging raises costs and affects perceptions of safety, yet street art remains a vital form of creative expression. Immersive Graffiti set out to reframe the issue, exploring how designated zones and immersive technology could support street artists while reducing antisocial behaviour. The project, led by HoloGen as part of the Smart Docklands Pilot Call 2024, used tools like Kingspray VR to provide safe, legal platforms for urban creativity.

The project included a series of workshops in 5 schools/youth groups where students used Kingspray VR to explore graffiti in a safe, immersive environment. These workshops allowed students to experiment creatively in virtual space. The programme culminated in a final event where participants had the chance to spray-paint in real life – bringing their digital concepts into the physical world and opening a conversation about the future of graffiti in urban areas.

By transforming graffiti into an accessible, digital art form, the project challenged perceptions and opened space for more inclusive, community-shaped approaches to urban design. It created a foundation for future collaborations that treat public space as both canvas and commons.

Deliverables: Immersive VR sessions using Kingspray in schools, a final spray-painting event in a designated space, student-led exploration of urban art.
