Smart Docklands Networking Event- April 25th

We were delighted to host our latest networking event in Dublin City Council’s new Innovation Hub in CHQ.

It was great to chat with people from local government, private industry, academia and across the local community. On the night we launched our new Open Call for Pilots across four themes aligning with our recent community engagement survey:

🌳 Environmental Monitoring

🌿 Urban Greening/Biodiversity

🚸 Antisocial Behaviour/Safety

🏫 Community Development

With an overall fund of €50,000, four pilot projects will be chosen with funding of up to €12,500 for each pilot selected.

Smart Dockland’s End of Year Networking Event

It was a full house for our end of year networking event in the vaults of Dogpatch labs with almost 100 attendees joining us on a cold and wet November evening. When we started these networking events back in 2017 our motto was “if people turn up we will continue to host these events!” and we’ll be looking to have more regular meet-ups in 2024.

There was an extremely impressive attendance from across the the Dublin ecosystem from big tech, SME’s, startups, consultants, recruiters, academia, local authorities and public sector bodies. We’re extremely grateful for the support that we gotten from across the ecosystem to build out great collaborations and partnerships. Huge thanks also to Dogpatch Labs and Patrick Walsh for all their support over the years and the event’s venue.

Over the past 7 years something unique has been built across Smart Dublin via various partnerships and collaboration models working with CONNECT, INSIGHT and ADAPT. The City Council has co-invested over 2 million euro to date on these partnerships through Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) delivering a significant multiplier impact on top. Through these investments we have been able to build and scale our the Smart Districts Model and bring in new partners and opportunties along the way. Smart Docklands, Smart DCU and Smart D8 are great templates of how we are working to accelerate smart city innovation in Dublin.

We have built out some really talented teams across all our programme areas delivering impact in thematic areas such as future connectivity, digital twins, IOT, Drones, AR and health and wellness. Our initial Smart Tourism programme has also now evolved into a dedicated Tourism Unit culminating in winning the European capital of Smart Tourism designation for 2024!

See a link to all the slides that were presented on the night. Please reach out to us if you want to bring a great project idea or opportunity to Dublin!

Looking forward to the next event!

Unleash the Power of 3D Data for Dublin!

10/05/2019 7:00 pm

Dublin City Council (via the Smart Docklands Programme) have brought together a consortium of amazing partners – Grangegorman Development Agency, the Open Data Unit (DPER), The Department of Community and Rural Development, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded Building City Dashboards Team at the University of Maynooth and D3D – to create the first 3D Data Hackathon in Ireland.

This Hackathon aims to engage anyone with an interest in 3D data and the built environment, from those working with BIM (Building Information Management) to App and Game Developers, Urban Planners and more!

They are seeking new solutions, applications and services addressing 4 Challenge Areas:

  • Transportation, Mobility & Environment
  • Urban Planning & Digital Construction
  • City Infrastructure & Asset Use
  • Civic Engagement & Serious Gaming

The event is hosted by Autodesk ÂŽ and Hibernia Reit. Other supporters of the event include Google, Leica, ESRI, Invicara and Bim & Scan, with more to be announced.

We are also delighted to be officially partnering with the AR/VR Innovate Conference –which takes place on Friday 10th May, 2019 in the RDS, Dublin.

Participants will get exclusive access to the 3D model as well as more detailed building models. Given the complex nature of the data available, we will be providing access two weeks in advance of the Hackathon to all fully registered teams.

Registration: You can register your interest here as an inter-disciplinary team with up to 6 team members, or as an individual and we will place you in a team before the Hack starts. Places however are limited, so please register early to avoid disappointment. More details on the challenges for the Hack and relevant data sets will be provided to teams who register before the deadline of noon on Friday 26th April, 2019.

Prizes will be awarded to the overall winner and runners-up. Winning teams will be scored on the novelty of their idea, alignment with the challenge areas, viability/impact and commercial/social impact.  Prizes will include funding and other supports for developing your solution, mentoring, and access to workspace and exhibition spaces as well as media coverage of your idea. The winner and all runners-up will be invited to participate in an exhibition of their work as part of a ‘Future City’ AR/VR showcase in the CHQ building in the Docklands in late September 2019.

The main data sources for the event will be an extract of our 3D Docklands model, as well as a number of data-rich models of specific buildings in IFC format. The Docklands model data will be provided in FBX and 3D Studio Max format, which can be used in free and Open Source modelling software such as Blender, but also with popular free and low-cost game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine 4.There will also be a number of data-rich building models to play with, suitable for use in BIM surfer, BIM server, IfcOpenShell, IfcPlusPlus, FreeCAD, xBIM Toolkit or any other openBIM system.

Participants are strongly encouraged to utilise additional open data from Ireland’s national repository Data.gov.ie, and Dublin’s own local open data repository Dublinked.ie  We will be providing a ‘curated’ list of open data sets from the Dublinked portal to registered participants. You are also welcome to use any other relevant open data you wish.

VELO-CITY 2019 – SMART PEDAL PITCH

Velo-city 2019 will be held in the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) located on the River Liffey and positioned at the convergence of several key coastal, river and canal cycle routes. The historic, cultural and social amenities of the city centre are within ten minutes walking distance and even closer by bike! There are a number of different cycle routes nearby, where delegates can experience scenic routes which run along the coast of Dublin Bay or head inland along the city’s canals.

The Challenge:

Seeking the most innovative and market ready smart cycle tech solutions to shape the future of cycling in cities.

The Opportunity:

There is serious ambition to scale up cycling in cities across the world. It will require major investment in cycling infrastructure, increased promotion of cycling as an option, radical policy decision making, and a step change in attitudes to cycling in cities. We also believe there are a number of short term improvements possible through the application of smart, low cost innovative and scalable technologies.

In line with our push towards healthier, more liveable cities we are seeking technology and data driven proposals that address the following areas:

  • Seeking Better Data – Better use of cycling data to understand issues
  • Promoting Safer Cycling – Both actual accidents and perception of safety
  • Cycle Security – Improving cycle parking, and reducing bicycle thefts
  • Intelligent Transport System on Cycling – Better integration of cyclists into intelligent transport systems

What does the shuttle look like?
The Easymile EZ10 shuttle is a driverless electric vehicle that can carry up to 15 passengers. It has an in-built access ramp for mobility-challenged passengers and doesn’t need any additional road infrastructure in order to operate. The EZ10 is currently in daily operation at locations in the US, Holland, China and Estonia and is expanding globally.
