VELO-CITY 2019 – SMART PEDAL PITCH

Velo-city 2019 will be held in the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) located on the River Liffey and positioned at the convergence of several key coastal, river and canal cycle routes. The historic, cultural and social amenities of the city centre are within ten minutes walking distance and even closer by bike! There are a number of different cycle routes nearby, where delegates can experience scenic routes which run along the coast of Dublin Bay or head inland along the city’s canals.

The Challenge:

Seeking the most innovative and market ready smart cycle tech solutions to shape the future of cycling in cities.

The Opportunity:

There is serious ambition to scale up cycling in cities across the world. It will require major investment in cycling infrastructure, increased promotion of cycling as an option, radical policy decision making, and a step change in attitudes to cycling in cities. We also believe there are a number of short term improvements possible through the application of smart, low cost innovative and scalable technologies.

In line with our push towards healthier, more liveable cities we are seeking technology and data driven proposals that address the following areas:

  • Seeking Better Data – Better use of cycling data to understand issues
  • Promoting Safer Cycling – Both actual accidents and perception of safety
  • Cycle Security – Improving cycle parking, and reducing bicycle thefts
  • Intelligent Transport System on Cycling – Better integration of cyclists into intelligent transport systems

What does the shuttle look like?
The Easymile EZ10 shuttle is a driverless electric vehicle that can carry up to 15 passengers. It has an in-built access ramp for mobility-challenged passengers and doesn’t need any additional road infrastructure in order to operate. The EZ10 is currently in daily operation at locations in the US, Holland, China and Estonia and is expanding globally.

Why is the shuttle coming to Ireland?
European Mobility Week is taking place in 41 countries across Europe between the 16th and the 22nd September 2018. The focus is on the shift to more sustainable and green transport options for getting from A to B. As part of the week, Dublin City Council and its partners are hosting the Future Mobility Showcase and the EZ10 is being brought to Ireland to show its citizens what the future of mobility looks like.

Where will the shuttle be running?
The driverless shuttle will be running along a specially designated route between the Dublin Convention Centre and the 3Arena on North Wall Quay.

How can the public get involved?
This will be the first opportunity to see a driverless shuttle in Ireland. Come down, take a look and get a photo! From Monday 17th September, there will also be a limited number of tickets available to take a ride on the shuttle.

What else is happening?
There will be family-friendly activities, including stilt-walkers and face-painting, along the route. There will also be a showcase of future transport options, including BikeepBleeperbikeebikes IrelandGoCarGyrowheel and UPS cargo bikes.
